Plymouth, England to Plymouth, Massachusetts departed September 6, 1620, spotted land on November
9, 1620 and went
ashore November 11, 1620In 1620 the Mayflower and the Speedwell were hired to go to the colony of Northern Virginia by
Thomas Weston, John Carver and Robert Cushman. The Speedwell had problems with leakage from the
beginning and was finally determined unseaworthy to make the voyage with the Mayflower. When the Mayflower left England there were 3 pregnant women onboard. Elizabeth Hopkins gave
birth at sea and named their son Oceanus. Susanna White gave birth to a son named Peregrine and Mary Allerton
gave birth to a stillborn son.Two hired sailors are mentioned, William Trevore and ?? Ely ??. Bradford says "Two other seamen
were hired to stay a year: when their time was out they both returned". So they did not stay in the Colony.Christopher Jones was the captain of the Mayflower. They anchored off the tip of Cape Cod on
November 11,1620. The Mayflower was "about nine score" according to Bradford.(William Bradford, Of Plymouth Plantation, written 1630-1654, original at Massachusetts State
Library, Boston)The Mayflower and Speedwell had departed from London "The emigrants recruited at large by the
merchant adventurers". Both ships left the harbor on August 5th, 1620 but had to turn back to Dartmouth as the
Speedwell was leaking badly. Both ships sailed again around August 25th and had to turn back to Dartmouth
shortly thereafter. They decided that the Speedwell could not make the trip so the consolidated 102 passengers
on the Mayflower and the others went back home. "Altogether, some twenty persons, about a sixth of the
company, had to turn back... Thomas Blossom withdrew and returned to Leyden with his wife and two sons.
Cushman's friend, William King, decided that fate might have something better in store for him than becoming "meate for ye fishes".
Also Robert Cushman stayed behind.
